Khajuraho is a small town in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh. It is located in the district of Chhatarpur, about 620 kilometres southeast of Delhi. Its population is of about 20,000 people.

Khajuraho is also the main town of the Bundelkhand region, a geographical region divided between the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, and where people speak the dialect of Bundelkhandi. Bundelkhand is a very important region of India and it is also unique in many ways, one of the most obvious reasons being that it is located at the heart of India. And there are the evergreen forests of Chitrakut, the beautiful lakes of Charkharis, the diamond mines of Panna, the palaces of Orchha, and of course the Kama Sutra temples of Khajuraho, to name a few wonders of the region.

The Khajuraho group of monuments is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the most popular tourist destinations in India, Khajuraho has the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples, famous for their erotic Kama Sutra sculptures. The temples were built over a span of 200 years, from 950 to 1150. They suffered destruction by early Muslim invaders between c. 1100-1400 AD as various disfigured statues at the temple complex attest. There were originally over 84 Hindu temples, of which only 23 now stand in a reasonable state of preservation, scattered over an area of about 21 km. Today, the temples serve as fine examples of Indian architectural styles.
